SCIENCE PACKAGE ON LAKE
VÕRTSJÄRV
Scientists have
studied bodies of water for a long time to understand the factors that shape
and change the processes related to them. These results of this research have
been made public in many popular and scientific publications. Still the
majority of people’s knowledge about lakes are limited with boats, swimming and
fishing. The body of water as a whole with all its diversity and species is for
them a great enigma. Lake Võrtsjärve Center unites the Võrtsjärve Foundation
and the Limnology Station of University of Life Sciences.The science package
purpose is “to bring people to the lake”. The theoretical lectures have been
planned in a proportion with the field works. The program contains lectures
about the lakes in general, about the coastal and water plants, plankton
organisms (bacterial-, phyto- and zooplankton), bentic animals, the quality of
water (chemistry and toxicology), fish. After quenching your thirst for
knowledge the group will head out on the lake on the kaleship to do fieldwork,
see the flora and fauna of the lake and the southern tip of Võrtsjärv.

Includes: theoretical
lectures and field works on kaleship under the supervision of the scientists of
the Limonology station, use of the equipment, 1 night’s accommodation in
Vehendi motel, catering (2 breakfasts, 2 dinners, 1 suppers, coffe pauses),

KALESHIP CRUISES FOR
GROUPS
Kaleship and its
crew awaits groups of up to 25 people to come and enjoy Lake Võrtsjärv and the
traditional sailing ship for pleasure and study cruises. The duration and
program are open to the groups wishes. The experienced captain and first mate
will tell you about the building and navigation of kaleship, about trawling and
will take the groups to the furthest corners of Lake Võrtsjärv. It can be a
study cruise to the Limnology Station, the Lake Museum or a nearby conference,
a nature cruise to see the huge denudations and walk on the various hiking
trails, or a pleasure cruise to relax on the islands and see the sights ranging
from old mills to fancy manors. After the kale cruise it is possible to
continue your vacation on your own, visit the archaeological sites, enjoy
swimming, boating or fishing.
Price: 1000 EEK per hour

KALETRIP AROUND LAKE VÕRTSJÄRV
One-day kale trip under the merry leadership of local
fishermen will show you the most interesting places on Lake Võrtsjärv. Guests
will get acquainted with the intricate art of navigating the kaleship, learn to
hoist the sails, whistle for the wind and hear how the people of Lake Võrtsjärv
used to live and build boats in the old times. The captain and first mate are
also the shipwrigths who built the kaleship and they are happy to share the
information. The cruise starts from the small fisher village Valma. The crew
will first head towards the Lake Museum visible on the horizon, where guests
can meet the creatures of the lake face-to-face, learn about the nature of Võrtsjärv
and the history of the surrounding regions. From there the trip will continue
in a merrier mood taking the course towards Tondisaar to enjoy a hearty
fisherman’s picnic in the beautiful solitude of the island. After taking a walk
among the reedbeds and stone ruins of the biggest island of lake Võrtsjärv the
kaleship will head for the village of Vehendi in Rannu parish, which is the
oldest settlement in the area – the fields found here were cultivated at least
2500 years ago. During the short hiking trip the group will see the
staircase-like coastal embankment called Trepimägi, the huge Neitsikivi erratic
boulder and to hear about the once proud Rannu feodal castle and more recent
history. We will be back in the starting point in the evening.
